Septennial fesivities
of our lady Virga Jesse
From Friday 13th to Sunday 29 August 2010, Hasselt will welcome thousands of visitors to celebrate the 45th septennial festivities of Our Lady Virga Jesse. These festivities are officially accepted as part of the Flemish cultural heritage. The tradition of the devotion of Our Lady Virga Jesse dates back to the 14th century, but the septennial festivities have been celebrated from 1682. Only twice was the septennial cyclus broken: during the French Revolution and in 1940 when the Second World War broke out.
